A JOURNEY TO THE END OF THE CONTINENT

Join us as we wind through the most impressive Overberg region for 2 days of pure joy situated just 2-3 hours from Cape Town. An epic market built in an apple warehouse, wine tasting in the Hemel-en-Aarde wine valley, one of the world’s largest mammals and overnighting at the southernmost tip of Africa.

Duration of Event: 2 Days, 1 Night

Here’s what you can look forward to over 2 incredible days:

Day 1 - The Hemel-en-Aarde Wine Valley, where the wine quality reaches new heights!

  • After a 7:30am pick up we head east of the city for 90 minutes over Sir Lowry’s pass toward the apple and wine producing region of Elgin. The Elgin Railway Market is the brainchild of businessman Roger Orpen, who converted the old apple warehouse into a bustling steampunk station market boasting local vendors, live music and a gateway to this beautiful region. The market is a celebration of local cuisine, drinks, crafts and fashion displayed in the most charming of settings where art deco meets Victorian, unlike any other in South Africa.

  • We then head south east toward the Hemel-en-Aarde Wine Valley which translates directly into ‘Heaven & Earth’. Cooled by Atlantic breezes, carpeted in vineyards and folded in the arms of fynbos mountains, this wine paradise near the beautiful coastal town of Hermanus, produces (some might say) some of the best cool-climate wines in the world.

  • Possibly the most unique tasting room in all of South Africa is our next stop. The chapel like design of the Ataraxia Wine Farm is a firm favorite of Revelers in the past. ‘Ataraxia’ a greek word meaning “a serene state of mind, free from worry and preoccupation” , they’ve named location suitably. You’ll be treated to some of the most spectacular views and wines of the tour.

  • The Moggs Country Cookhouse is our lunch stop, a hearty countryside restaurant that serves up a menu perfect for both the winter and spring period. Mother & daughter team Jenny & Julia Mogg make use of fresh and seasonal produce to create a great experience for any level of foodie! View the winter menu here.

  • Our 2nd tasting destination is the Bosman Family Vineyards. Known for its unspoilt landscape: the muted colours of the indigenous fynbos, the odd ambling porcupine, the hawk wheeling overhead in the wide blue sky.  And far off the sea, the mountains and then more sea. So it is not surprising that in 2001 Jannie Bosman (Snr) came searching for the perfect place to plant Pinot Noir. As a nurseryman, he was also on the lookout for land that was isolated from other vineyards so that he could propagate vines without the threat of pests or disease.

  • Our overnight accommodation will is based in the Cape Agulhas National Park in a shared house close to the water or in the nearby town of Arniston famous for it’s calming coastline. Your tour companion(s) will prepare a traditional South African dinner in the form of a fish or lamb braai depending on the preference of the group. In true local fashion, everyone on tour gets involved in the braai. Someone on drinks, one in front of the grill and others in charge of side dishes, this is loads of fun as we create and share an enjoyable meal together. *Accommodation subject to availability.

Day 2 - The Whales of Walker Bay

  • After a continental breakfast we’ll head for the big attraction in this area. The most southern tip of Africa. A bucket list moment for many; the place where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet. Turning your back on the land, looking out over the ocean and knowing that the entire African continent is lying behind you is quite something. The national park is packed with indigenous fynbos, an historical lighthouse and a Japanese shipwreck to name just a few. For those keen on an early morning hike, walk or chilly swim this is a great location for it.

  • Leaving Cape Agulhas for Hermanus we then team up with the best in the whale watching business, Southern Right Charters. You’ll be accompanied by a specialist whale guide and dedicated crew on-board their impressive boat. The trip includes snacks and refreshments. The general experience time is 2 hours but it’s not capped at that. This is a must do for any ocean and/or whale enthusiast. (Optional)

  • If the boat trip is not your thing then whales can be regularly seen from the shore in Hermanus. Peak whale watching season is from June - December and it’s common to enjoy a drink and some tapas while looking out onto the ocean in search of the perfect breach!

  • After your time with the whales we head out to the tiny town of Kleinmond for a late lunch. The Kabel Joe’s Seafood Zone is typically local, not flashy and true to it’s own. Hake and Chips, Prawns, Calamari, Crayfish and more! If you’re in search of a small town spot on the water to enjoy the local culinary gems then this is it!

  • We then make our way back in the direction of Cape Town via Clarence Drive. Some say this competes with Chapmans Peak for the most scenic drive in the world, we’ll let you decide! Built into the rock faces of Koel Bay, just a few feet above the ocean in places the road winds wonderfully through a memorable landscape. We’ll stop for a sneaky South sip of a traditional South African delicacy and several frame worthy photographs before heading back to your accommodation in the city..
