CHOOSING WHERE

How much time and how much in-country travel you’d like to do are two of the most important factors to consider when planning your South African Safari. Equally important is what you’re looking to acheive from your time on Safari. South Africa boasts a number of different regional options which fit into almost any itinerary and understanding the differences is key to planning your perfect trip.

NORTH OR SOUTH?

NORTH: The Kruger National Park along with the Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve are home to the finest Safari Lodges and Big 5 Experiences in the North and the world! These both require an additonal 2.5 hour flight from Cape Town or 1 hr flight from Johannesburg + a road transfer, considered well worth it in the name of the ultimate Safari Experience.

NORTH ANIMALS SIGTHINGS: The northern regions are where the best animal sightings exist. Leopards in particular are almost exlusively seen here more often than in the South. Of course no sightings can be absolutely guaranteed but complete Big 5 sightings are frequent.

SOUTH: The Karoo and Garden Route regions are great options if you prefer to remain within the Cape and are between a 3-4 hour drive from central Cape Town. Safaris in this region consist of uniquely different landscapes and vegetation compared to the North and is an ideal option for those looking to see more of the greater Cape region.

SOUTH ANIMAL SIGHTINGS: The contrasting sizes of the reserves in the South allow for frequent sightings of big game (elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo and large antelope). Conservation best practices however only allow for a certain amount of big game per an acre of land meaning that these reserves often only carry one or two herds of elephant and one pride of lions. While this does’nt take away from the safari experience, it is important to note.
