Olifants River Valley. Clainwilliam. Vanrhynsdorp. Springbok.
The only desert in the world to go through such a dramatic transition in such a short period of time. The Namaqualand area is an incredible place to travel during the months of August and September. An area that lies barron for nearly three quarters of the year, it’s transformed into a Spring wonderland for the lucky visitors who make the trip up to view the spectacle.

Namaqualand 1

Day 1: Enter Namaqualand

We leave Cape Town in a northerly direction and head for the heart of Namaqualand through the Olifants River Valley. The quaint town of Clanwilliam is our first stop for a late morning breakfast or brunch.

We have time to take in the harsh but beautiful landscape that once was a desert in one of the most flower rich conservation areas anywhere in the world. Our accommodation for the next two nights is in the town of Kamieskroon, Garies or Springbok in a comfortable, family run Guesthouse or farm cottage.

Day 2: It’s a wonderland

The next two days our focus will be mainly on the flowers and the areas where they are most prominent and mind blowing.

Depending on climatic factors such as rainfall and sunlight during preceding months, the focus will be mainly on the low lying areas which are the best for the month of August.

We spend as much time as we can among the flower regions where your tour companion will provide a packed lunch and drinks on request. Dinner will again be prepared by your tour companions in the form of a traditional South African braai.

Day 2 and 3 Continued

The Namaqualand National Park holds some of the best scenery of the entire trip. The Skilpad section of the park is one of the most memorable scenes you’re likely to see, a real treat for travelers of the past.

The historically rich town of Springbok is also on the itinerary for day 3 where we’ll be able to marvel the massive granite rock structures coupled and carved into the flowery landscape. The town’s history is routed in precious semi-precious stones from this area at the Springbok Lodge, a local landmark. Dinner will then be at a local restaurant in the area.

Day 4: Head Down South

We start the journey back down south as we continue to enjoy the open road flanked by droves of flower fields and the naturally carved contours of this route. We return to the town of Clanwilliam.

The Ramskop Wildflower Garden with over 350 species of cultivated wild flowers is a highlight of Clanwilliam in the spring. Our overnight accommodation is in a incredibly warm and charming guesthouse or cottage where your tour companion will be prepare and serve dinner once again

On Day 5 we head back to the Mother City after a hearty and generous breakfast. We’ll take time to reflect on the last few days, look back at memorable moments, share photos and revel in each others company one more time. You’ll be dropped at your location of choice.
